World Baijiu Day 2018

Fourth time's a charm...

Several years ago, when the world was young and baijiu was still virtually unknown outside of China, I met Jim Boyce in Shanghai. I was hosting a tasting of about 80-odd baijius and I needed backup. It was harder than I imagined to wrangle up a posse, but Jim, then a stranger, showed up. And for that, I’ll always be grateful.

I used the notes we created that day to help form the backbone of my first book on baijiu, and Jim would go on to establish World Baijiu Day, a great global ganbei that I have been pleased to celebrate for the past three years.

This year, the combined forces of Drink Baijiu and Ming River are participating in a slew of events in both coasts of the United States. It’s always a good time, and I hope to meet many of you at some of the New York events. Details below (a full listing of global festivities here)…

Derek Sandhaus

The Bai-ologist

Derek Sandhaus is the educational director of Ming River Baijiu. He is the author of several books about China, including Baijiu: The Essential Guide to Chinese Spirits and a forthcoming book on Chinese drinking culture, Drunk in China (Potomac, Fall 2019). He currently lives with his wife and dog in Jerusalem, where he is developing a fondness for arak.
