Join author Derek Sandhaus for a discussion on Chinese spirits and how, for more than nine thousand years, alcohol has shaped and been shaped by Chinese culture. What was baijiu’s connection to early Chinese immigrants to the United States, and why the drink has been largely absent from American Chinese restaurants until recent years? With guided baijiu tasting and a book signing of Baijiu: The Essential Guide to Chinese Spirits following the talk.


Derek Sandhaus is the educational director of Ming River Baijiu and editor of He is the author of several books on Chinese history and culture, including Baijiu: The Essential Guide to Chinese Spirits and a forthcoming book on Chinese drinking culture, Drunk in China. He currently lives with his wife and dog in Jerusalem, where he is developing a fondness for arak.
